Youth Group
Mary hosts a weekly meeting with kids in her neighborhood. It is important to help the next generation step into the calling the Lord has placed on their lives. She teaches morals, values, and Christian principles, encourages them to realize who they are in Christ, and equips them to walk in the fullness the Lord has for them. She caps the limit to 50 and turns away kids each week. Along with the biblical lessons, they sing songs, do crafts, and have a snack. When funds allow, a heaping full plate of beans and rice are served to the children.
It has been Mary’s joy to see the children grow. She is amazed at their memorization skills and how even the youngest ones can pray and recite Bible verses. Sharing the love of Jesus with the next generation of world changers has always been a passion of Mary’s.
Prison Ministry
We stood at the gate and prayed. We had no court paper allowing Mary access, we had no food to give, but we had God. With her sweetest smile, Mary asked for permission to visit. With many stern comments and looks, the guards discussed, and we prayed. To Mary’s great surprise, she was allowed in. That opened the door for a 3-year ministry. Mary and a dear friend, Joseph, ministered weekly at the prison. In conditions that could only be called deplorable, (120 men in one 30’x20’ cell) we saw hearts change. We had hundreds of men, women and boys accept the Lord during our visits, including a witch doctor. We didn’t fully realize the impact until one day, after missing a week, the guards informed us that we needed to make sure we came every week because the men were much less angry and got along markedly better when we visited. One great reward came when a mission team was sleeping in dorms across the street from the prison. Mary awoke one morning to this beautiful sound and in her sleepy stupor, it took her a minute to realize that the prisoners were singing worship songs! Her eyes filled with tears as they sang, sounding like angels in heaven.
Hundreds of men have given their lives to the Lord through this ministry. We are also happy to report a new prison has been built and even though still crowded, the conditions have greatly improved.
Village Visits
A highlight for Mary and visiting teams is when we visit our Haitian friends in their homes to share the good news of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection and what that means for them. We have had entire families accept Jesus. We have had ladies kneel by the side of the road and ask Jesus to come into their lives.
As difficult as life in Haiti is, if one soul is saved for Jesus it is worth it. Here is one story. Mary and Brenda, a friend, were doing village visits in Mary’s neighborhood one day, bringing the gospel. We approached one lady doing her laundry and had a meaningful conversation with her. Mary knew she wasn’t a Christian because her children’s hair hadn’t been cut. That is a sign that the family believes that the child has certain power and rights over the family, usually as a result of voodoo. We told her stories of Jesus and shared our testimonies and after a long discussion, she agreed to accept Jesus into her heart. We rejoiced but the real rejoicing came 2 weeks later. Jhanson reported she had died, and we had done a great thing by sharing Jesus with her as know she will have eternal life with Him. Praise God!
