Reforesting

Deforestation

According to Wikipedia, Haiti has less than 1% of its original primary forest and the current rate of deforestation will lose the remainder in the next two decades. Thousands of trees are cut down every year to make charcoal for cooking.

Tree Distribution

Seeing the devasting effects of deforestation, we began a tree growing program. Since its inception in 2015, we have planted 90,000 from seeds in our tree nursery. Most of these trees are given away to local farmer. As seeds can be difficult to find and are quite expensive, the seeds from the fruit we eat are dried and planted. Papaya, grapefruit, sweet oranges, lemons, limes, mangos, cashew, cherries, avocados, soursop, guava, custard apple (cachiman), arerola cherries are some of the fruit seedling we have grown and given away.

We also grow trees used for lumber and poles. White wood, cedar, mahogany are a few we’ve planted. With proper watering, these trees grow up to 30’ in the first 2 years. Our ½ acre home site was purchased with 4 trees and we now have a forest growing with 100 trees.

Moringa

Moringa is one of our favorite trees. A native of India, it is a fast-growing, drought-resistant tree that is proven to have many medicinal purposes.

Moringa is beneficial for a wide variety of reasons and is often referred to as a “super food” and we call it the Miracle Tree. Moringa is often used to treat arthritis anemia, asthma, cancer, constipation diabetes, diarrhea, epilepsy and stomach and intestinal disorders. It also helps to deal with headache, heart problems, kidney stones, helps to lower blood pressure.

Every part of the tree is edible and holds different health benefits. According the Healthline.com 6 science-based health benefits of moringa are:

  1. Very nutritious
  2. Rich in antioxidants
  3. May lower blood sugar levels
  4. May reduce inflammation
  5. Can Lower cholesterol
  6. May protect against arsenic toxicity

The tree is also known to help with malnutrition, the seeds can be crushed and used to purify water. You can see why this is one of our favorite trees.

It is our goal to have a tree planted by each house in Pignon.

Moringa Tea

We love making moringa tea at FARM Haiti. We hand-pick, hand-wash and shade-dry the leaves, before packing into tea bags. The tea has an earthy taste with a calming effect. It is organic and caffeine free. We have friends who drink a cup of moringa tea every day and say they have more energy, increased lung function, and greatly reduced inflammation. We would encourage all of you to try some!  Contact Us to get your supply.
